Imagine. . .
. . .standing at the edge of a 20 foot cliff. Below lies a
lake of blue, green, grey, and orange hues, with water so clear
you can see every rock and stick on the bottom. Reflected in
its waters, and rising 2,000 feet above, is an incredibly steep,
equally colorful mountain face with random cracks and fractures
creating an indescribable pattern of twisted joy and intimidation.
A fresh breeze fills your nostrils with clean, pine scented
air, and the cries of a falcon fill your ears with awe. Now,
JUMP!
. . .gripping a sun warmed rock ledge with
one hand, the other slipped into a cool, narrow crack, one
foot securely perched,
and the other dangling in the air. Tied into your waist harness
is a singularly strong rope that stretches 15 feet over your
head, than is redirected straight down, 70 feet below you,
to your trusted instructor who confidently yells, “Climb
on!” You close your eyes for a moment, recollect yourself,
and then without an inhibition in this world, you yell, “Yaaaahhhhooooooooooooo!”
. . .sitting in front of a warm, crackling
fire, the dark silhouette of towering pine trees and boulders
standing against
the night, and a million sparkling stars above. Around you
are 10 of the best friends you have ever had. Of course, you
barely knew them a week ago, but after all you’ve gone
through together, all you’ve shared, and not to mention
that 13,000 foot alpine peak you just helped each other up
and then down again, you begin to wonder if you can even remember
living without them. You forget every ache and pain, and tell
God “thanks” for showing you true life and the
meaning of friendship.
